Algeria condemns 'cowardly' ADF attack on Kasese school
The Algerian government has condemned the attack on Mpondwe LhubirihaSenior Secondary School by Allied Democratic Front (ADF) rebels in which 41people lost their lives.
The private boarding school is situated near the border with DR Congo and 37 of the victimswere students there.
“Algeria strongly condemns the cowardly terrorist attack which occurred on Friday evening,targeting a students’ dormitory at Mpondwe Lhubiliriha Secondary School in NyabugandoParish, Karambi Sub-County in Kasese District, Western Uganda, and which has claimed thelives of dozens of innocent students, while inflicting severe casualties,” read the statementby the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad.
“While extending its heartfelt condolences and expressing its full solidarity with theGovernment and the brotherly people of Uganda, Algeria expresses its sincere sympathywith the families of the victims of this heinous crime, and its wishes for a quick recovery toall the wounded,” the statement said.
“Algeria reaffirms the need to strengthen cooperation and coordination at the regional andinternational level to fight against terrorism in all its forms and to work with a view to dryingup the sources of its financing,” read the statement released Saturday, June 17.
President Yoweri Museveni on Sunday vowed to eliminate the militants responsible for the"cowardly, terrorist" attack.
"Their action -- the desperate, cowardly, terrorist action -- will not save them," Museveni saidin a statement, his first remarks since the attack late Friday.
Museveni last month met a delegation from Algeria led by their Minister of Energy andMines, Mohamed Arkab, who called on him at State House Entebbe.
The delegation was in Uganda to follow up on the MOU signed when Museveni visitedAlgeria in March 2023.
